NPR Summary
Translated from Bohumil Hrabal's native Czech, the novel follows a young man during the period in which Nazis occupied Czechoslovakia. Milos Hrma recovers from attempted suicide as a clerk trainee for the railroad, dealing with the dark comedy of bureaucracy as he comes of age against the backdrop of World War II.
